There aren't many, but they're important! I could probably end up getting 2 of these if convinced. I'm a big fan of roguelikes and have been playing a lot of Pixel Dungeon and Tales of Maj'eyal recently.Graphics aren't the biggest concern for me but it doesn't hurt for a game to look good (Armello seems like the best graphically, but is pretty new).Caves of Qud seems to be the worst graphically but is also one of the highest rated games from the ones I mentioned, and yet is still in Early Access.KeeperRL sounds pretty ambitious, does it live up to its description?Convoy sounds like FTL with cars and I put around a hundred hours into FTL. How similar is it?Renowned explorers is another new one and would be kind of a gamble, and honestly it looks a little cheesy to me but could be fun if the randomization is done right.edit: Took a bigger plunge than expected and bought Caves of Qud, Barony (which was suggested to my in a previous thread), and Armello.Caves of Qud, after my time playing Pixel Dungeon and Tales of Maj'eyal, honestly seems a bit clunky in the controls but that may be because I have gotten used to mouse input. Once I get used to it I can tell it will be very enjoyable. The UI could be a bit more informative. A bit annoyed there's no sound, but it is honestly not a problem listening to my own music either.
Tons of options for character generation compared to others, though, and I know I've just scratched the surface of this game.To clarify about the controls, I know it's mimicking Dos roguelikes but new games imo should still keep improving when it comes to user interaction. 2 clicks of the mouse is preferable to 3 seperate keystrokes when done a thousand times over the course of one game.Barony I may end up returning, I do prefer turn based games and making a roguelike real time opens up a whole new world of problems imo; if I wanted bad combat I'd just play minecraft. I'll give it a bit more time before deciding but those are my initial impressions.Armello I have enjoyed the most so far. Imo there aren't enough heroes (8 between 4 factions), but there's enough randomization of the map, items, and events to keep it fun for a very long time. What really got me excited was the online matchmaker as I keep hearing it's better in multiplayer, which is true as long as people don't leave. It is possible to get screwed early on but there's usually a way to come back if it's not too far in the late game.
Caves of Qud is great. Of those you asked about and that I've played, it's the best. Intriguing sandbox world, awesome character generation, challenging and polished gameplay, devs are constantly adding new things and keeping in touch with the community. Graphics are sparse but clean and informative. Good stuff.KeeperRL is interesting, but I feel like it's inferior to Qud in many ways, and it has never held my interest for long. To me it just feels 'small', but there are things to love about it.Convoy I backed on Kickstarter and have put maybe 2 hours into, I found it boring, flawed, and lackluster in many ways. Combat is annoying, events repeat far too often, and it's just not a very fun game.
It's to FTL what tic-tac-toe is to chess.Armello is on my list, I just don't have the time to play much right now, so waiting to pick that up.
